Before the winter season begins, car owners should make sure that their vehicle is in tip-top condition. Here are six tips for keeping a vehicle healthy during the winter.

    Battery inspection

Frigid temperatures can certainly reduce the performance of a car’s battery. Although all car batteries are stamped with an expiration date, it is still a good idea to have the battery tested. Even when outdoor temperatures begin to dip below freezing, a strong battery should still be able to crank the engine rather quickly.

    Check the oil

The motor oil needs to remain at the optimum level at all times. Some high-mileage engines tend to burn oil at a faster rate, which increases the need to check the oil level more frequently. To find out the correct type of motor oil to use, car owners should refer to the owner’s manual.

    Tire pressure

Colder temperatures can cause tires to gradually lose pressure. Keeping the tires inflated to the recommended pressure is very important. Good tire pressure increases traction in wet weather and enhances the stability of the vehicle. A good rule of thumb is to check the tire pressure about every two weeks during the winter.

    Engine coolant

In order for a car’s heater to keep the interior warm, the coolant level needs to remain at the appropriate level. If the coolant level tends to drop every so often, there is probably a leak somewhere within the cooling system. Pittsburgh Toyota service experts recommend checking the condition of the coolant hoses as well.

    Windshield wipers

A vehicle’s windshield wipers definitely come in handy during inclement weather. The condition of the wipers has a major impact on the driver’s visibility. If the wipers show any signs of wear and tear, they should be replaced before the wintry weather arrives.

    Wash the vehicle

In an effort to melt snow and ice, most areas put down salt on the road. Washing the vehicle will certainly help to keep the paint fresh and prevent the formation of rust as a result of salt exposure.
